MY LIFE: A FIGHTING CHANCE

MY LIFE: A FIGHTING CHANCE

1×30

Behind the imposing doors of Peacocks Gym in East London, towering heavyweights spar in the ring, exchanging thumping lefts and rights as their corner men shout out instructions. Tucked away to the side of the sweat stained canvas, a heavy punching bag shifts from side to side with the impact of each punch.

But this fighter, is not a monstrous heavyweight, but a petite 12 year old girl in a hijab flanked by her doting dad Kaleem shouting encouragement alongside her. Aida is used to being the lone female in the boxing gym but this doesn’t stop her from giving as good as she gets.

In just 3 months Aida will be facing her first opponent in a ring not too far from here and she knows that she needs all of the practice she can get. Having trained for 3 years alongside her ex boxer father, Aida is now ready to step up and try to make her name in the world of female British boxing. Whilst her skills and talent are impressive on their own merits, Aida is also fighting a different fight outside of the ring; to show that girls who wear the hijab can do anything their non wearing counterparts can do.
