The Last of the Matchmakers

The Last of the Matchmakers   BBC1

Parag Bhargava is the owner of the UK’s largest introduction service in Southall, Middlesex – the Suman Marriage Bureau (established 1972). Our film focuses on the very unique place that the old fashioned bureau occupies in a sector where even traditional and religious marriages are moving online.

The Suman Marriage Bureau claims to be the first and largest of its kind in Europe and has successfully arranged in excess of 8,000 matches , with even grandchildren of couples whom Parag introduced coming to him to look for potential partners. We meet Parag in his office where photographs and thank you letters line the walls, together with a picture of his mother, the founder of the bureau. Whilst the SMB has a great record historically, it has faced stiff competition in recent years due in part to the rise in digital dating app’s such as Shaadi and the younger generations desire to do their own searching. This documentary offers an insight into generational tensions and explores the relationship between the modern and traditional methods of match making through the lens of one of the last of the true matchmakers.
