The Greatest Circus in Palestine
The Greatest Circus in Palestine is a hopeful portrait of life and solidarity from the perspectives of the young members of Palestine’s only circus school. The film centres on the experiences of Su’ad, Yasin and Leen, 3 young performers who want to advance their circus skills whilst dealing with and coming to terms with difficult circumstances in their personal lives. These two strands form the foundations that the film builds on, as the class of talented kids prepare for a defining performance in front of their biggest audience yet. We explore the complex lives of our young contributors and try to view a childhood of extremes through their eyes. Whilst the ongoing trials and tribulations of their environment remain, the circus represents a safe space where they can have fun, make friends and most importantly be children again.
Dancing Queen
Twelve-year-old Laleeyah lives on the Crow Creek Native American reservation in South Dakota, USA. There aren’t many opportunities for people on the reservation, and life can be tough, but Laleeyah loves to learn about the traditions of her ancestors and takes pride in keeping them alive. Once a year there is the Pow Wow: a big, colourful, celebration where the whole Crow Creek tribe comes together to compete and celebrate with traditional dancing, music and dress.
For several years running Laleeyah has been crowned Junior Miss Crow Creek – the best young dancer on the reservation. But since the last Pow Wow she has developed an illness called hyperthyroidism, which makes her feel weak and tired. As she comes to terms with her illness, Laleeyah still wants to hold on to the things she loves most: dancing, representing her tribe, and her crown. But will she have what it takes, and can she still be the dancing queen?

A Fighting Chance
- Behind the imposing doors of Peacocks Gym in East London, towering heavyweights spar in the ring, exchanging thumping lefts and rights as their corner men shout out instructions. Tucked away to the side of the sweat stained canvas, a heavy punching bag shifts from side to side with the impact of each punch.
But this fighter, is not a monstrous heavyweight, but a petite 12 year old girl in a hijab flanked by her doting dad Kaleem shouting encouragement alongside her. Aida is used to being the lone female in the boxing gym but this doesn’t stop her from giving as good as she gets.
In just 3 months Aida will be facing her first opponent in a ring not too far from here and she knows that she needs all of the practice she can get. Having trained for 3 years alongside her ex boxer father, Aida is now ready to step up and try to make her name in the world of female British boxing. Whilst her skills and talent are impressive on their own merits, Aida is also fighting a different fight outside of the ring; to show that girls who wear the hijab can do anything their non wearing counterparts can do.
